James is a proud, red mixed-traffic tender engine.
With his shiny red coat, James likes to think of himself as a Really Splendid Engine. He sometimes has grand ideas about the sort of work he should do, which can lead to trouble.
James is very proud of his splendid red paint work. He hates pulling trucks, and believes that he should only pull coaches. He thinks himself superior to the others, and can be shallow, boastful, naughty, and vain, particularly to those who appear old-fashioned, weak, slow, or dirty. This has caused him to have somewhat of a rivalry with Toby. However, on a number of occasions, he has found himself in need of help from those whom he has insulted and is, in the end, apologetic.
James is based on a Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Class 28.
James is painted NWR red with black lining and gold stripes. He has a "5" painted on his tender in yellow with a black border.
- James is a mixed-traffic engine, which means he can pull both passenger coaches and freight cars.
